A 29-year-old Italian athlete has died following his collapse at an orienteering competition in China.
Mattia Debertolis passed away on Tuesday, four days after he was discovered unconscious during the men's middle-distance race at the World Games in Chengdu.
Medical staff at one of China's premier healthcare facilities fought to save Debertolis's life over the course of four days. However, their efforts proved unsuccessful, and he died on Tuesday morning.

The Italian was amongst a dozen competitors who failed to complete the middle-distance race, according to official competition records.

|The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, though the race took place in sweltering conditions with temperatures exceeding 30C.
Competition organisers confirmed that Debertolis received urgent medical attention immediately after his collapse. In their official statement, they noted: "Despite receiving immediate expert medical care at one of China's leading medical institutions, he passed away."

The World Games administration pledged to "continue to support the family of Debertolis and the orienteering community in every possible way."
Tom Hollowell, who heads the International Orienteering Federation, expressed profound grief at the tragedy. He stated he was "not able to adequately describe the unfathomable depth of sadness in this tragic loss of life."
